Steam Boiler Contractors for Commercial and Industrial Facilities
Porter Boiler has worked on commercial and industrial steam systems across Southern California for over 65 years. We hold a California B General Contractor license and a C-4 Boiler, Hot Water Heating and Steam Fitting classification, which is the combination required to service, repair, and install steam boiler systems legally in California.
Our R-Stamp certification authorizes us to make welded repairs to pressure vessels in the field. Most boiler contractors in Southern California do not carry this credential.
For a facility running high-pressure steam, it is the difference between a contractor who can do the repair and one who has to recommend replacement.
Low-Pressure and High-Pressure Steam Systems
Steam systems in Southern California fall into two categories, and they require different handling.
Low-pressure steam systems
Low-pressure steam systems operate at 15 PSI or below. They are common in multifamily residential buildings, older hotels, and smaller commercial properties where steam heat was the original design.
These systems are generally fire-tube boilers, straightforward to service but sensitive to burner calibration and water treatment.
When they fail, it is usually a control fault, a feedwater issue, or a tube problem that can be repaired without pulling the unit.
High-pressure steam systems
High-pressure steam systems operate above 15 PSI and serve a different class of facility. Hospitals run them for sterilization. Food and beverage producers use them for process heat. Manufacturers depend on them to keep production lines running.
A high-pressure system is almost always a water-tube boiler, sized for sustained output under load. The inspections are more involved, the repairs are more technical, and the cost of unplanned downtime is higher.
This is where R-Stamp certification matters: welded repairs to a high-pressure vessel require a contractor with the credential and the procedures to back it up.
Industries We Serve
Hospitals and medical facilities
Hospitals and medical facilities run high-pressure steam for sterilization and surgical suite support. The system cannot go down during occupied hours, and repairs need to be planned around clinical operations. We have done this work.
Food and beverage producers
Food and beverage producers use process steam for cooking, pasteurization, and cleaning in place. A boiler failure shuts the line. We carry the pressure vessel credentials to make welded repairs on site, so the repair does not automatically become a replacement.
Manufacturing Facilities
Manufacturers across the region, including aerospace, chemical, and pharmaceutical facilities, depend on steam for process heat that is tied directly to production output. Their systems are typically large water-tube units running continuously.
Hotels and Hospitality
Hotels and hospitality properties use steam for laundry and heating in older central plant configurations. These tend to be legacy installations that need a contractor familiar with aging equipment and original system designs.
SCAQMD Compliance for Steam Boilers
Steam boilers in Southern California fall under SCAQMD jurisdiction. For units above 2 MMBtu/hr, which includes most commercial and industrial steam boilers, Rules 1146 and 1146.1 set the NOx emission limits and establish the compliance timeline.
We handle AQMD permitting for new boiler installations, burner retrofits, and equipment replacements. If your system is approaching a compliance deadline or has received a Notice of Violation, we can assess what it requires and take care of the permit work.
For units that still qualify, a burner retrofit is often a more cost-effective path than full replacement.
Our SCAQMD compliance service covers the full permitting and installation process for both steam and water heating equipment.
Schedule Steam Boiler Service in Southern California
Steam system problems compound quickly. A tube leak becomes a shutdown, a shutdown becomes a lost production day, and the longer a qualified contractor is off site, the fewer options remain on the table.
